Mr. Howell of the Golden Age indicates that he can finance the magazine and wants to meet Mr. Markham. Miller has set up a tentative appointment and asks Markham to ratify or change the appointment. He will visit with Mr. Ingersoll next Saturday and will be coming by automobile. Written on the letterhead of Miller & St. Clair, agents for authors and publishers.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
